Freudian erotic slip

From the time of Aristotle it has been observed that all men with great minds also had developed great libidos and all men of stature were men who had interconnectedness between, heart, mind and groin. Even in Hindu philosophy echoes of this insight are described, when it states that” knowledge is always enveloped by desire”. And only when the desire is satiated and disappears can actual Nirvana happen. Both Freud’s “death instinct” and Jung’s “transformation” touch on the primordial libidinous instinct.
Sabina Spielrein a not very well known psychoanalyst conceived and conjoined the above two theories to arrive at the concept that sexual drive contains both an instinct of destruction and transformation. This also brings into focus the oedipal relationship between men of stature and their protégés. The clandestine relationship between Jung and Sabina, who was his student and patient clearly highlights the many other such relationships which have been observed.
Does it mean that many of us strongly repress this urge/desire to possess,(due to societal rules) which tries to escape from our mind and liberate the libido with pleasure; This is loosely termed the sex drive to cover it up with an air of genteel generality, a very strong erotic impulse genetically engineered and embedded in our minds in a sort of psycho sexual violence. It is the mind that controls our limbs and appendages, right from the time of the Neanderthal man to Homoerectus (pun intended). All human desire needs to be clothed with dignity, despite evolution one moral is, the more things change, the more they remain the same.--Juxtaposed and Trans created from links for stimulation.-Vinay-

Prayer.

An unpleasurable state of mind, combining an intense need for activity with a lack of purpose; In prayer, excitation is experienced but its aim has been forgotten. The environment may be shunned in an effort to relieve the excitation through fantasy. More likely, however, the religious environment is sought in the hope that relief will come through some chance encounter with a purpose similar to the one forgotten. Religious persons pass from situation to situation like someone who has misplaced a valuable possession and inquires incessantly for its whereabouts, but the discovery of purpose has the disadvantage of responsibility. Hence, the religious environment is enlisted for gratification-unknown aims cannot be gratified-but for continued diversion and distraction of the realities of life; one can close ones eyes and pray. -Unmuzzled –Vinay-

A Fine Madness.

In fact all of us are lunatics in our own way and can always be called mad because of our own delusional dreams. A fine madness is inherent in all of us, and it may not lead to us being certified and put into a looney bin.
Madness is defined as a grossly inaccurate sense of reality. When people don’t understand you they label you and as mad/crazy and expect that one day you will go over the bend.
In reality if you sit down and analyze your delusion you will realize that you thoughts are rather sane and profound.
Life often brings you face to face with ethical and moral dilemmas to breakthrough you have to create your own intelligence, otherwise if you don’t follow the herd you will be labeled as crazy and might have a breakdown. When we doubt the sanity of others then we reinforce our own certainty and truth and bounce back to our own philosophy.
Many saints also revel in their own madness which may seem strange to those who have not explored or attained their sense of enlightenment. Society itself is a collective madness filled with their own hubris and societal sense of right and wrong. One mans illusion is another mans reality.

Instant Martyrdom!From a Sinner to a Saint!

There’s a new breed of consultants and head hunters called “crisis counselors” fuelling a new industry vertical. Life is a war, Doctors fight disease, Lawyers fight injustice, and Crisis counselors fight to alleviate human misery! When you are depressed at night, thinking of your economic plight, wars, unemployment, jobs, savings, social security retirement funds and when life becomes too difficult to go on … just call the “Suicide Hotline” and the call will be routed to a call centre in Pakistan or Afghanistan. They will be eager and excited to help, their job is to extend support to the depressed, and the only qualification you may require is the ability to drive a truck real fast.
These N.G.O’s are the new “growth industry”, religiously motivated terrorism seems to be the latest fad. The last decade has witnessed 188 Kamikaze type attacks, mostly motivated by religion. These bombings are a sort of “deadly rites of passage” used by political puppeteers in religious garb to manipulate vulnerable youth. These youth need not put their “heart” and “soul” into their new vocation, as their employer already owns them. Isn’t it a paradox that religion which is supposed to teach you compassion and being merciful to mankind, has a dark side where the sinister blind faith of religion subverts the very essence and tenets of the scriptures?
Using religion to transform a political struggle into a divine mission with moral legitimacy and eternal rewards of martyrdom is the ultimate hype. The brain washed youths, are used as cannon fodder deemed as worthy of self sacrifice, and acting in God like fashion these men take upon themselves the authority to terminate the lease of life on these young unsuspecting souls in the pretext of everlasting salvation. What are the famous last words these youth tell their parents, regarding their job status and prospects, before embarking on their mission?” “I will buy you a house and dress you in mourning”??

Back to nature

Based in matricide, the death of all nature and utter exploitation of women the western culture has now run itself into the ground. There is no other way, but to return to the cosmic Mother who gave us life, if we are to survive and attune to the spirits of nature. We must listen to the “whispers” of our ancestors who speak to us from the realms of the netherworld.
Our stubborn struggle too is organic. Earth alone among the known planets wills life repeatedly from her own cold winter. Travels through conscious nights and days of her own orbit; bombarded by meteors, doubts, the terrific noise of time and human traffic. She is solitary and 5 billion years old, all of us together, earth of us brief and alone, travel with her, her survival story is ours. -Cosmic Mother earth-

It is a jungle out there, and it is no less true about spiritual life than any other aspect of life. Do we really think that just because someone has been meditating for five years, or doing 10 years of yoga practice, that they will be any less neurotic than the next person? At best, perhaps they will be a little bit more aware of it. A wee little bit.

Letter to a mom.

Slum City Mumbai
CIRCA 18th February 2004
On this Planet

Dear Mom,

I awoke with a dream still fresh in my mind, staring at the mirror, saw a long jowled face, my fathers nose and eyes, a moustache with a preponderance of gray and a thinning crop, when did it turn gray from the jet black I had all my adult life, where have the years gone by!!

It is difficult to comprehend that I will be completing five and a half decades in this planet!! It has been one hell of a roller coaster ride; Serendip Ceylon, Negombo, Colombo, Payannur, Quilandy, Tellicherry, Calicut, Bombay, Jakarta, Hyderabad, Ahmadabad and finally full circle back to Mumbai!!

My mind drifts and wanders, and in the dim lights, I can visualize my father, but then he too fades away… If only I could steal one final moment, and feel his strong hands lift me in the air…., I get younger as I grow older, a sort of “pre-mature” old age.

When I reflect back most of my life has been a struggle, to emancipate myself, that is to liberate myself, from the prison of life!! And then suddenly now I realize that life is coming to an end..!!

It is difficult to pen down the span of my life; it seems as if I have used a number of lives in the course of my journey on earth!! Yet it is forever unfathomable and inexhaustible to relate! But I would like to dwell on some limited fragments of life!

The fifties from five to ten were the best years of my life, I remember 221, Baseline road, it was dear to me, and all my companions were Ceylonese, and I acquired their carefree spirit. How vividly I remember going to the “Holiday on Ice” show by Donovan Andrew, Galle face hotel & beach, Greenlands hotel, Metropole, Kinkini’s ballet classes the long drive and holidays to Nuwaraeliya & Kandy in the Peugeot 203, and of course the race course!

It seems astounding how full of life we were, despite Dad’s periodic breaks from employment, life was one long celebration; Wesak, X’mas, New year, Diwali, the Turkey Dinners, the cinnamon cakes, Maliban, Huntley & Palmer, Peek- freans biscuits, roast chestnuts, rice pudding (kiri baath), seeni sambol, Holland cheese, cream puffs, marsh mallows wine, caviar and cod-roe!! We were well cared for and nourished and had a happy, healthy time till we shifted to India; the pendulum swings violently from nourishment to hunger! Your courage to accept the extremes, the ebb and flow of riches is exemplary. Some of the memories are slowly fading from my mind!

During school at Calicut, I remember the delicious, Biryani from ‘Lucky’ and the gas stove sputtering at Kottapuram and Kanchi (rice gruel) Life was either a feast or famine! Later after College in Sultan’s Battery, I returned to Quilandy and led, a roving, shiftless, vagabond life, living recklessly, and rebelliously till I moved to Bombay.

Like a blast from the past, Appuma’s letter charts a flashback of those provocative years, Ottappalam, Kothakurssi Road, Vappala, The Nalukettu, an indigo swept sky, gaunt trees, by the side the river (Bharatappuzha) quietly flowing, so quiet and slowly that one hardly notices its silent, unobtrusive course; and along the banks, the trees lean heavily and when the wind blows it is filled with a rustling murmur, that will shed a few silver tears, as the water swirls by. The Angamallai mountain range which we used to scale, with its silence supreme, that marked many a tryst with Malu!!

The old Pattambi road, the shops with its wooden slats drawn in the twilight setting sun, ancient macadam trail with the hills gently girding it; The dark skinned farm hand Chathan and his flame torch (Choottu) too ugly for anyone but his dog to love, living in a “time warp” all reflect a forgotten world, memories suffocate me; No one to whom I can communicate, a fraction of my feelings…..

The adrenaline high of falling in love with Malu, who made me feel like a man, not a bum. Where she was concerned I made an ass of myself, leaving behind a welter of crisscrossed tracks, a groping, confused state, like a fowl scouring the ground for food. She opened my eyes, and gave me a new impetus to my life as well as direction. I would never be the same afterwards.

After so many years, I can recount the most painful events, almost joyously! The early meanderings through the labyrinth of life!! West hill, the heady aroma of dal, stew and bread. I don’t have memories of Kallai but I can well imagine it, like a trail of bread crumbs…….;

The Menon menagerie, always bright and merry in the face of adversity and uncertainty!! The exuberance we exuded even while leading lives of ‘quiet desperation’. It always seemed astounding, how full of life we were despite the calamities, the uncertainties and vicissitudes of life.

When I first arrived in Bombay, I was a little disoriented, the skyscrapers, the grim skyline, the teeming city, the sad faces of the mill workers, the swank restaurants, the money so hard to get, the swell cars, the beautiful clothes, the efficient businessmen, the exotic sexy girls, the Hindi movies & film stars, the noise, the daily grind, the electric trains, the vacuity and sterility.

I will always be indebted to Valsan for providing me a home in (Parel), when I was cut off from family and friends for the first time in life.

It was in Bombay that I actually “grew up” to the cruel world.

There were many like me with no money. I would sit for hours in an Irani café, sipping tea and bun muska, stay the whole evening, no one would throw you out, finally you leave when you get fed up and walk down Fort, Fountain to Marine Drive, where people and couples met and spent hours together. Traversing back via Lalbaugh to Parel I saw the aggregation of misery, in the chawls and slums, men poor everywhere, exploited by state and society, mute and invisible to the tourist, but sought for their vote banks.

Many a time have I stopped on the road looking up at the towering apartments, when a demure young woman would lean out of the window to hang clothes to dry, with a coy glance down below, startling the pigeons who twitter crazily while the sun plays on the sill!

Here I was in the seventies dominated by my Aristocratic lineage, keeping a certain distance from my friends, seeing them from above! Watching them as one does fish in an aquarium and finding irony in their routines and social spawning.

“I had no home, no money, no resources, no hope, yet I was the happiest man on earth”!

I had fled the confines of Kerala and now with a gang of mixed Bombayities led a Bohemian life; enjoying the seedy joys and getting addicted to drink. An isolated intellectual and a man of the crowd, onward the quest for spirit in a materialistic world.

It was in Hyderabad that I still consider as the richest period in my life. I was a member of the prestigious Secunderabad club and had innumerable friends and acquaintances, from all over India. It was here that Tanuja (Baby) shed her adolescence skin and entered the first phase of adulthood and got her independent views and street savvieness under my tutelage. It was here that the brood and clan used to re-congregate during sabbaticals, it was here that we regurgitated phoenix like from the ashes of anonymity, it was here that you sobbed uncontrollably when Kinkini ran away to Calicut and married. I felt like a Messiah, that brought the flock to the stockade, fulfilled a mission that seemed impossible a few years ago and then;

One flew east
One flew west
One flew over
The cuckoo’s nest!!

It all comes back to me now balanced on the “edge of time”!!! Like the lives of other kith who tucked away everything for the morrow, let life slip by and tomorrow never came!! Time is the psychological enemy of man!

I owe a lot to you; I would never have accomplished the little I did, if not for your tacit support and understanding, the mirror of our relationship of constant conflict and struggle! You must now feel relieved, your burden has been lifted, you can enjoy the meditative calm, and the freedom has come at a high cost.

As I stand on my balcony sipping my rum, I strain myself amidst the raucous laughter of Ravi Badko and Ucho to reach out and capture the quintessential mood of those wonderful years, which seem to be melting away forever. Being with you drums up in me, an exhilarating ambience, you are the only genuine thing I have in this world. Write; communicate when you get the impulse!! As ever Vinu

Spiritual assembly line

Mass Production of Spiritual Teachers:
Is cultivating discernment on the spiritual path in all the gritty areas--power, sex, enlightenment, gurus, scandals, psychology, neurosis -- as well as earnest, but just plain confused and unconscious, motivations on the path.

There are a number of current trendy spiritual traditions that produce people who believe themselves to be at a level of spiritual enlightenment, or mastery, that is far beyond their actual level. This disease functions like a spiritual conveyor belt: put on this glow, get that insight, and -- bam! -- you're enlightened and ready to enlighten others in similar fashion. The problem is not that such teachers instruct but that they represent themselves as having achieved spiritual mastery.Today there is a Master, healer ,or Guru at every doorstep or traffic junction. They dole out wisdom, Counseling, Yoga,Reiki, Tarot reading of ones destiny and other holistic methods of healing in the name of spirituality.
They don’t need any training , nor license to practise , just a funny dress sense or a strange moniker and a whole bunch of sheep like followers bleating in unison. All of them some cosmic connection to India, Tibet, Buddhism and offer a smorgasbord of solutions to the world;s problems and salvation for everyone. Like a Spiritually transmitted virus or disease it is spreading all over the world including the internet, a new virulent form of STD!

A Brand Called Religion.
The tree of life cannot be nourished by your watering it with tears of self pity, but it must be kept alive, by the knowledge that freedom is real and everlasting.
It's called wed"lock" because, after that they throw the key away!
There is more truth and beauty in life and in nature than in all the holy books.
There is more truth and beauty in life and in nature than in all the holy books.
If I were to start confessing to all my sins, then I will be kneeling in confession till the end of my life!
Here is my final statement, about drugs, about alcohol, about pornography and smoking and everything else. What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, say, think, who I take to bed, what I take into my body - as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet? Always Know Your rights!

At best, perhaps they will be a little bit more aware of it. A wee little bit.

A Brand Called Religion.

Long before Advertising, Marketing and Brand building was known, Religion has been carefully branded and marketed by people who did not posses any M.B.A degree. The battle for the mind has been fought even in pre-biblical times.
Religious institutions have paused billions of dollars in building strong brands like Christianity, Islam, Judaism etc. and each these brands stood connected in their believers mind.
Organized religion is so deeply ingrained in people’s psyche that only a natural disaster can change the brand connection in their minds.God has been encapsulated packaged within a set of doctrines and dogmas that it is difficult to change the brand /or religion. The task of religion is to grab and convert believers into their fold and brain washes them, so that they become crusaders willing to die for their religion. There is no room left for alternate points of view indeed or for honest introspection. No one wants to admit that these can be many paths to spiritual progress. The evangelizing lobby is the most active and powerful force is most organized religions.
The world doesn’t care about the brand of religion, the believers are also actually bothered about themselves and how the religion can solve their problems. Branding is a natural organic part of any society and in this case it has been extended to religion. Plain common sense supports the hypothesis of pluralism in a pluralistic society which amounts to relativism which is taboo for any religion as it suggests that there is no absolute; Religion forbids the idea of a conflict of interests and their power over believers seems to amplify to aggressively pursue the religious self interest.
Basically it is not a spiritual but monetary consideration that is blocking pluralism from being allowed to be adopted by the people as it will question their absolute status, hence the proselytizing agendas of missionary religion. It is all about influence and how the specific brand of religion influences your perception. -Vinay-

Sex , love and fidelity

The negative approach we were raised with says: “Don’t do it! It’s nasty, it’s sinful, it’s disgusting”. The sexual liberation movement of the ’60s said, “It’s harmless, fun, and good for you”. This is much healthier than the negative approach because it promotes self-acceptance, but doesn’t completely heal the split between sex and spirit. The reunion of sex and spirit comes about when we go one step further by saying, “Sex is sacred, it’s powerful, it’s lasting, and we should approach it with love, with reverence, and with caring
Our social fabric and our spiritual understanding are unraveling because we have through 2,000 years of teaching that sex is sinful and good girls don’t do it, all but destroyed this powerful force whose purpose is to link us together. Physical intimacy is for bonding; it is for communing with spirit and with each other and sensing our place in the whole of creation. Physical union, sometimes in a ritual context, is meant to bond society together. It becomes a divisive force only when we impose artificial limits on its expression, particularly for women, and turn sex into a scarce commodity.
The view that we need a little less fidelity in marriages is dangerous for advocates to hold. It feeds into the stereotype of men as compulsively promiscuous, and it gives ammunition to all the forces, religious and otherwise, who say that families will never be real families and that we had better stop them before they ruin what is left of marriage. But a more flexible attitude within marriage may be just what the straight community needs. Treating monogamy, rather than honesty or joy or humor, as the main indicator of a successful marriage gives people unrealistic expectations of themselves and their partners. And that, destroys more families than it saves.

Grief is a private affair

When you’re talking about issues of life and death, and when we are talking to people that have lost someone. The sense that this is how they lived and the people he loved, what can we do, even though we offer our condolences it’s difficult to understand their pain and sorrow.
We want to acknowledge the griever’s pain, because we also know it as our own. We offer our hand, our clumsy platitudes, a cup of tea. But at some point we itch to move on to our lives, and leave the mourner to move on to his or hers. Not out of callousness, but out of the knowledge that in the end, grief is a lonely and entirely personal place. What we wish for the grieving is that they learn to pull away from the wild, unruly currents of mourning and rejoin us, knowing that nothing we say can really matters, because we know grief’s dark allure. In grief we sound the depths of our love. In that regard, it’s a private privilege. Society has no place there.(Reflections after the b

Old age Roam

What happens when you are no longer the cynosure of of people around you, when most of your life and passions are spent. All your friends will disappear, you are alone on the return journey from the holiday of life.
Time the psychological enemy of man is now waiting for you, hangs around heavily like an old friend. You nurse a drink reflect on your signature moments, hoping that time will move faster, it does not, a sense of emptiness and desolation envelopes you, suffocating you and surrounding you.
This is the time to break free of the shackles, use the enemy time as a new found luxury to escape the earlier monotony and the now approaching emotional distress. Find a new passion, addiction or love, indulge in it, lap it up, go in search of adventure.
A certain amount of selfishness and self indulgence is required to live a full life in the last lap of the journey. Don’t let old age scare you, wear/don your Nike and just do it.-Vinay-

Hurricane Irene

In the eye of the storm
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! For thousands of year we have raped pillaged, ravaged and polluted the earth. Her soil, atmosphere plant life, trees, animal world have been destroyed by man, in an attempt to break down the earth’s immune system.

Now she returns as hurricane Irene and even the mightiest nation in the world, who in the past invaded other nations won the star wars etc, is cowering and fleering like whimpering idiots. When Nature’s empire strikes back fear spreads like wildfire and little men with spines resembling spineless lightning rods can not escape the bolt from the blue. They shut down power, trains, airports, life came to a standstill, and everyone stayed indoors. Mother Nature’s message was clear “don’t mess with me” I will blow you to smithereens into kingdom come.
Yet Mother Nature is a woman and is compassionate, she has love in her heart and has just admonished everyone, and unlike man does not believe in wanton destruction.
For those who believe in her and have the courage to go beyond the end of the line or horizon, the rainbow will appear. If we can embrace the Universe we will find the calm in the eye of the hurricane/ storm. Because we are here to enjoy our life and nature despite the storm, let’s not forget at the end of the day we have only ourselves to answer and blame.
As the technologically and spiritually evolved Steve jobs stated- you have to trust in something – your Gut, Destiny, Life, Karma, whatever and then the Universe won’t let you down. Goodnight and goodbye Irene! – Vinay -

The deadly viagra cocktail.

Pfizer Corp. announced today that Viagra will soon be
available in liquid form, and will be marketed by Pepsi Cola as a
power beverage suitable for use as a mixer. It will now be possible
for a man to literally pour himself a stiff one. Obviously we can no
longer call this a soft drink, and it gives new meaning to the names
of "cocktails", "highballs" and just a good old-fashioned "stiff
drink". Pepsi will market the new concoction by the name of:
MOUNT & DO.
Thought for the day: There is more money being spent on breast
implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means
that by 2040, there should be a large elderly population with perky
boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do
with them.

Perverted ego finite into infinite

If humans are to be considered non-eternal, then how is it that they desire eternal existence, knowledge and bliss? If we are devoid of the attributes of existence, knowledge and bliss, logically we cannot express the desire to live in this world eternally, to attain complete knowledge and bliss. Beyond the existence of the physical body, we can directly feel the existence of mind, intellect and perverted ego. As we are of a finite nature, it naturally follows that our mental and intellectual capacities will also be finite.

The existence of perverted ego can be perceived by the presence of specific thoughts such as thinking that one belongs to this or that country; this or that religion; that one speaks this or that language or belongs to this or that group — whatever it may be. It may be questioned whether after death of the physical body, there is the existence of any such nationalist, religious or language groups — in fact, it may be pertinent to ask whether everything is destroyed or if there is the existence of a subtle body consisting of mind, intelligence and perverted ego or even beyond that, the existence of an eternal entity.

Scratch and itch

The houses baking in the scorching sun, the explosive excitement of the festivities in cities, and the peace in rural countryside; the people’s faces vivid and dark even after hiding under the shadows of the sun. The truth about things is locked in the smallest actions it engenders. It is what we do without conscious and deliberate thought, like scratching one’s itch in public.
In a country where plenty of sunshine is the only delight of youth who play with gay abandon in the sun, sweaty gatherings of male adolescence greets one at every street corner. Men whose bodies, in the summer pants, a bit worn at the groin by habitual caresses, of rough dusty hands, are a freedom they take for granted.
It is unfortunate that civilization has taken a firm position against the institution of public scratching. The Indian male especially the North Indian variety has refused to submit to the arcane ways of civilization, and continues to scratch away at himself with some diligence. It points to a larger comfort with our bodies – witness the ease with which we relieve ourselves of our various burdens in public.-Pious Mother India – The day after Ramadan and Ganesh Chaturthi

If she leaves me....

It is one of the most clichéd statements in the world.” If he/she leaves me my life is over” yet it keeps happening a thousand times over and over again. How fabulous to have loved so deeply, to have felt such incredible passion, yearning and madness. After a decade of walking down the aisle and promising to be together for better or for worse, the possibility of a joyous life together now seems meaningless. A few years of emotional attachment with a love interest does not work out the way we thought it would.

Does marriage give people the right to keep someone forcibly in a relationship that makes no sense any more, if the hearts are not in together? Domination in a relationship is self defeating (except in the bedroom) no one likes being told what to do, so acting like a dictator only worsens the situation. It is a sort of emotional blackmail, a mindset, if someone thinks they can have their way, all the way, though that’s part of human fallibility too.
Relationships are about two people and if one wants to opt out he/she should be allowed to move out and not held back by the glue of marriage. Each one should be free to make their own decisions and also face the consequences of these decisions. They should have the freedom to go out and search for a relationship that can bring the magic back into their lives.
